Where Is a Good Spot to Mount a Pro Home Weather Station?
I just bought a Davis vantage Vue weather station and while it is being shipped I need to figure out where to mount it. My property is fairly surrounded by trees and I was thinking I may put it on my roof. Is the roof a good spot? Any other tips for picking a location?
Thanks.

The Davis Vantage Vue is a nice weather station with integrated wind, temperature, and rain gauges.
If you mount on the roof, you’ll need to be mindful of a few things: First, the roof gets hot, so your temperature readings may be higher than they should. You will also need to ground the station to protect against lightning. Finally, don’t mount near a chimney, as you will get incorrect readings when you use your fireplace, and it will get sooty.
The integrated temperature sensor does have a shield, so if you keep it on the edge of the roof in a more shaded spot (but not under a tree because of the precipitation sensor), it should be ok, though it might still read a little hot.
An ideal set up would be to have the wind sensor and rain gauge on the roof, and the temperature sensor under an eaves in a shaded area to keep it from reading too high from solar heating. I think the Vantage Vue console will accept another temperature sensor. You could put one in a shaded spot and compare with the one on the roof.
Have fun…it is always cool to be more in touch with the weather outside.
The roof is a great place. Maybe even up on your chimney if you have one.
